Under his leadership, the company has expanded its services to include skip-tracing, process-serving and environmental pollution investigation. Growing up in the family business, John learned his investigative skills from the best - his father, Ed Rice. They worked together for fifteen years, until his dad succumbed to a stroke in 1994.

Established in 1963. E. F. Rice Co., Inc. was founded in 1963 by Edward Rice. He was a former claims adjuster for the Home Insurance Co., who was already a pioneer in the field of medical malpractice investigation. The company he started investigated claims at every major hospital in the Chicago area. In addition to handling malpractice claims, the company investigated product liability claims against auto manufacturers and other large corporations. Auto accident investigations were also performed for insurance companies, such as State Farm, Progressive and CNA. This included obtaining police reports, locating insured drivers and interviewing witnesses. Under John Rice's leadership, E. F. Rice Co, Inc. was also a pioneer in the investigation of environmental pollution. The company performed investigations of manufactured gas plants, creosote treatment facilities and other toxic polluters.
