I was employed at Sterling for just over a year and a half and found the company to be a pleasure to work for. When I read the review written above I was in complete shock. Similarly to RL, I started at an entry level position within Sterling straight out of college. Unlike the above reviewer, I found the office environment to be an enjoyable one. The people at the company are extremely close and look out for one another. I was given a great opportunity to succeed, and took complete advantage of it, being promoted twice during my tenure at Sterling. I found the office managers to be extremely helpful with facilitating my growth in the business world. My direct manager mentored me and taught me business skills that I will take with me for the rest of my career. Sterling gets a 5 out of 5 in my book, and if you're seeking opportunity for growth and a friendly work atmosphere, I'd definitely recommend you give Sterling a chance. -BA

(If I were able to give this company less than a star I would.) Although I am grateful for the opportunity Sterling has given me, there are many issues that this company needs to address, if it wishes to retain qualified employees with the company. As most entry-level jobs, the pay is indeed quite low, but it has benefits including health, medical, and even a 401K, (which to some, may even the low pay). Sterling makes all their employees work hard for very little, and don't get any recognition whatsoever. I've seen people who've worked there over 1 or 2 years who haven't received an increase in pay despite repeated promises in interviews that they indeed would get it. The work is mind-numbing with very little reward. As of late last year (2006), Sterling [finally] implemented a reward system of giving the "best employee" to receive a $50 American Express giftcard for having the most positive reviews. (Please note: Although working hard is a given qualifier, it has been based upon, **big shocker** who was best at brown-nosing their managers, etc etc.) Although, it is true that no matter where you go to work, there will always be snitches who want to get into the good graces of their managers, it was quite prevalent in Sterling Testing Systems' working environment. But, this company has major issues regarding how they treat their employees. I've often seen first-hand accounts of specific managers [especially in the Criminal Department] mistreating (occassionally yelling at, and even spying on) their employees by accussing them of "not being on time." For those of us who commute everyday through the LIRR and through the subway lines, being a few minutes late is a given and should not be considered to affect work performance. But repeatedly, I've seen managers solely use that as the main reason for letting people go. On a more serious note, I learned that Human Resources is not there to help employees, but to protect those in managerial positions from any possible harm or accusation any employees may have against them. If you're looking to find job opportunities, save yourself the trouble and look elsewhere. This is one company NOT worth working for.
